Shanghai is China at its most cosmopolitan — and the country’s most stylish gay landing. A little over a decade ago it was called China’s “gay capital”; that crown has slipped and the scene has gone underground, but what remains is chic, welcoming and genuinely fun. Here’s everything a gay traveller actually needs — the clubs and bars, the honest word on saunas and massage, where to stay, the venue map, and the insider tips we’d give a friend.
A decade ago Shanghai was called China’s “gay capital.” That crown has slipped — the scene went underground and Pride has been cancelled every year since 2020 — but what remains is quieter and genuinely stylish, centred on the leafy former French Concession. It’s the easiest, most cosmopolitan place to be gay in mainland China — you just have to know where to look.

An underground but stylish scene — anchored by one club, lifted by the world’s best rooftops.
Shanghai's flagship queer-leaning dance club inside TX Huaihai — one serious techno room, one big pop-and-hip-hop room, young mixed crowd and one of the best soundsystems in town.
More →Six-storey nightlife complex inside Fuxing Park; the queer crowd gathers at Culture Club on the fourth floor — big, friendly, pop-driven and refreshingly free of hookup pressure.
More →A small Fumin Road bar with a loyal local following — the real Shanghai gay local, low-key and welcoming, in the heart of the French Concession.
More →The honest answer, updated July 2026: Shanghai no longer has a functioning gay sauna scene. The names that anchored it — Ding Lin, Door Health Club, Huli, Hawaii Gym — have all closed, and nothing verifiable has replaced them. Listings you may still find online are ghosts; don’t cross town on their word.
What the city does have is the mainstream luxury-spa tier (every five-star in our hotels list) and, for the cultural itch a bathhouse used to scratch, the extraordinary Lai Lai Dance Hall ballroom afternoons in Hongkou. If you confirm somewhere above-board, tell us and we’ll verify it.
The full story in our complete Shanghai guide → · Regional saunas guide →We don’t currently have a gay massage venue in Shanghai we can verify and stand behind — listings float around online, but the churn is high and we won’t print names we can’t check. What we can vouch for is the mainstream luxury tier: every five-star in our hotels list runs a serious spa, and the city’s blind-massage (盲人按摩) shops are cheap, legitimate and everywhere.
Massage etiquette in China →How the scene really connects — honestly, and with the caveats.
Hookups in Shanghai run on Blued (no VPN) and Tinder (with a VPN). The cosmopolitan user base is the most internationally fluent on the mainland — English-friendly profiles, expats and well-travelled locals — and the conversational tempo sits somewhere between Beijing’s and Bangkok’s. The former French Concession bar scene is where in-person meets concentrate.
A frank word on the money-boy economy: it was more visible before 2020 and the Concession had specific bars in that register, but most are now closed or rebranded. What’s left works quietly through WeChat groups and Blued DMs, primarily for a domestic clientele. Mainland Chinese law treats sex work as illegal, and foreigners carry real risk, so we cover this responsibly and don’t publish how-to detail — the app-based normal hookup is the safer route here.
Sexual health: Shanghai United Family Healthcare runs an internationally-staffed clinic with PrEP, PEP and rapid testing for travellers — the standard recommendation for Western visitors on the mainland. More in our HIV & PrEP travel guide.
Where to sleep — the hotels with a real gay following, by area and budget.
Many gay visitors base themselves in the leafy French Concession, the sweet spot between sightseeing and the nightlife. Options run from five-star splendour to cosy boutiques — skyline glamour in Pudong, design-led cool in Jing’an, landmark luxury on the Bund. Same-sex bookings are a non-event everywhere; this is purely about style and location. Book via Trip.com, which finds China hotels more reliably than the international sites.

A doable route that mixes the icons with the scene.
Land mid-afternoon, drop your bag and walk the Bund (Waitan) promenade at sunset — golden colonial facades on one bank, the neon Lujiazui skyline on the other. Drink it in from a rooftop (Flair at the Ritz-Carlton, or the Waldorf’s Long Bar). Dinner wherever a local you’ve matched with recommends; later, head to Potent for the queer-friendly floor.
Slow morning: brunch on Anfu Lu and third-wave coffee on Wukang Road, past the landmark Wukang Mansion, then wander the former French Concession. Afternoon: the free Shanghai Museum or the Power Station of Art on the Huangpu; evening drinks at 390 or Roxie before a big night at INS or Potent.
Cross to Pudong for the skyline up close, or take the high-speed train an hour out to a water town. A long lunch — soup dumplings, red-braised pork — before you fly.
Gay-friendly tours and the easy escapes an hour by rail.
