A vertical mountain megacity of hotpot, neon and a harder-partying side than you’d expect.
Overview
Chongqing is unlike anywhere else in China — a 30-million-strong municipality stacked vertically across cliffs and bridges where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet. It’s the country’s cyberpunk capital: a light-rail train that runs through an apartment block at Liziba, the cliffside lanterns of Hongyadong, and a foggy, neon skyline.
For a famously inland, hot-blooded city, the gay scene is livelier than its reputation suggests — Chongqing kids party hard. It clusters downtown around Jiefangbei (解放碑) and the youth-heavy shopping district of Guanyinqiao (观音桥), with riverside bars along Nan’an.
Summers are brutally humid — one of China’s "furnace" cities — so life genuinely starts after dark, which suits a night out perfectly.
This is a smaller scene than the big four — explore the map below for the handful of venues we track, and help us verify and grow it.

Chongqing’s gay nightlife is small but spirited, with a venue or two that get going late around Jiefangbei and Guanyinqiao. The local crowd is young and up for it, and weekends are the time to go. Venues change, so check the map listing is current and grab the address before you head out.
Beyond dedicated spots, the riverside bars along Nanbin Road (南滨路) have unbeatable views of the skyline and make a relaxed, mixed place to begin the evening. Jiefangbei’s rooftop and basement bars are also easy starting points.
The scene here is compact; treat any sauna listing as a starting point and verify it’s open before travelling across this very hilly city — distances that look short on a map can be a steep climb or a long detour.

Modern gyms sit inside the big malls of Jiefangbei and Guanyinqiao. Your hotel gym or a Meituan (美团) day pass is the simplest option — handy after all those stairs.
Stay in Jiefangbei to be central and walkable to nightlife, or on Nan’an for those postcard skyline views across the river. Same-sex couples sharing a room is unremarkable; international chains are smoothest.
This is the hotpot capital of the world — fiery, numbing málà broth is non-negotiable. Also chase down Chongqing xiaomian (小面) spicy noodles for breakfast and grilled skewers by the river at night.
A vivid two days.
Day 1 — neon Chongqing. Ride the Liziba monorail through the building, wander Hongyadong at dusk when the lanterns light up, then hotpot and a late drink in Jiefangbei.
Day 2 — rivers & views. The Yangtze cable car, Nanbin Road for skyline bars, and skewers by the water to finish.
