Brand-new (2024) French-luxury tower on the redeveloping North Bund in Hongkou — stylish, good value, river views, and unusually close to the district's own old-school gay venues and saunas.
Officially the Sofitel Shanghai North Bund, this is a brand-new arrival — opened in May 2024 — and a quietly stylish base rather than a party hotel. A 30-storey, 315-room French-luxury tower on the redeveloping North Bund waterfront in Hongkou, with interiors by Hong Kong's Cheng Chung Design blending French romanticism with a Shanghai music theme and Haipai culture; it sits beside the 1933 Old Millfun heritage complex and Music Valley, and many rooms face the Huangpu. Inside there's the all-day Le Chanteur, the L'Orchestre lobby lounge for afternoon tea and evening drinks, and a Club Lounge with river views, plus a reported indoor heated pool, SO SPA and gym (confirm the spa and pool at booking, as the English Accor page is sketchy on them). Being so new, guest reviews are still thin, and there's no rooftop bar despite the riverside setting.
Standard rooms tend to land around ¥900–1,800, which is strong mid-luxury value next to the central Bund hotels. Hailun Road metro (Lines 4 and 10) is about five minutes' walk and the classic Bund and Nanjing Road are roughly 2.3km — a short hop or a pleasant riverside stroll. The French Concession nightlife is 20–30 minutes across town, but here's the local twist: Hongkou has its own gay venues, including the much-loved Lai Lai Dance Hall (the older-gentlemen's tea-dance), ManGo Bar and several gay spas — so the immediate district matters more here than for most central hotels. Accor is a committed group at brand level (IGLTA Platinum partner, the 'Together' LGBTQI+ and Allies network), though this property isn't individually certified.
