Where the bars are
Most LGBTQ+ nightlife sits in a walkable belt across the former French Concession and into Jing’an. You’ll find relaxed early-evening bars that turn into dance spots later, plus a few dedicated clubs that get going after midnight on weekends. Crowds are a mix of locals and the city’s large international community, so English goes a long way.
What to expect
Venues here open and close faster than anywhere else in China, so the smartest move is to check a current listing rather than a year-old blog. Door situations are casual; cover charges are rare except for special events. Weeknights are quiet — Friday and Saturday are when the floors fill.
- Cocktail & lounge bars — good for a relaxed start, conversation and a first drink.
- Dance bars & clubs — later, louder, busiest at weekends and around Pride season.
- Mixed/queer-friendly spots — plenty of Shanghai nightlife is open and welcoming even when not strictly “gay”.
