If China has a queer capital, it is here. Locals call it “Gaydu”, and the nickname has earned itself. While the bigger-name scenes in Shanghai and Beijing have thinned out in recent years — venues closing, the mood more cautious — Chengdu has quietly become the most relaxed place to be openly gay anywhere in mainland China.
The nightlife clusters around Chunxi Road (春熙路) and the Jinjiang District, the same downtown grid where you’ll shop, eat and sleep. It’s a genuinely easy scene to step into: the crowd is mixed and welcoming, people will take a newcomer under their wing, and a little Mandarin goes a long way. Chengdu’s whole personality — slow, tea-house-paced, more interested in a good meal than in judging you — carries straight through to its queer life.

More →The honest answer, updated July 2026: Chengdu’s bathhouse scene is a shadow of its pre-pandemic self, but it isn’t quite zero. The survivor is MC Space (满舍), the bar–sauna–KTV complex by Dongmen Bridge (天仙桥北路6号, 海成大厦1楼) that anchored the old “Golden Triangle” — still publicly listed on Chinese platforms and by every signal we can see still trading, though this corner of the scene changes fastest, so confirm on Blued or by phone before crossing town.
Other 2026 listings you may find online (small houses around Yusha Road) we can’t verify to our standard, so we won’t print them. For mainstream steam, the Tang Yue hot-spring hotel off Chunxi Road is excellent. If you confirm somewhere above-board while in town, tell us and we’ll verify it.

The international hotels are your safe bet for a proper spa. The JW Marriott Hotel Chengdu, right in the Chunxi Road heart of things, has a spa and pool built for exactly the kind of post-club recovery a long night here demands. For something more local and characterful, many of the city’s traditional venues fold a little wellness into the experience — a night at the Shufeng Yayun opera house, for instance, can come with a shoulder massage included with your ticket.
