★ Canals & tea houses

A 1,700-year-old canal town on Shanghai's western edge — stone bridges, teahouses and wooden boats — and the easiest old water town to reach, entirely by metro on Line 17.

Often called the Venice of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao (朱家角) is a 1,700-year-old canal town on the city's western edge and the easiest 'old water town' escape you can make — doable in half a day and reachable entirely by metro, which sets it apart from the more famous but far-flung Jiangnan towns like Wuzhen. Whitewashed Ming and Qing houses line a web of canals crossed by 36 stone bridges, the star being the five-arch Fangsheng Bridge, the largest stone arch bridge in the Shanghai area. Wooden boats pole you past teahouses, the old post office and Kezhi Garden, the town's largest private garden.

The town itself is free to wander (it now runs on a reservation system via its official WeChat account), with individual attractions paid — a combined through-ticket for the main sights runs roughly ¥60–80, and a private boat circuit is about ¥150 per boat, split among passengers. Getting there is simple: take Metro Line 17 from Hongqiao all the way to Zhujiajiao, reaching Hongqiao first on Line 2 or 10. Door to door it's around an hour and a quarter from the centre and barely ¥8 each way. Go early on a spring or autumn morning to beat the tour groups and catch the best light on the water, and graze on local snacks like braised pork knuckle and 阿婆粽 (grandma's zongzi) along the lanes.
