Beijing is the political and cultural heart of China, and its gay scene runs on the discreet-but-real model — clustered around the Workers’ Stadium and Sanlitun and anchored for years by the club Destination. It’s quieter than its peak, but the capital stays welcoming. Here’s everything a gay traveller actually needs.
Beijing is China at its most monumental — the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Tiananmen, the Summer Palace — and you should come for all of it. But set your expectations honestly on the nightlife: this is not Chengdu. The capital’s gay scene has thinned in recent years, with venues closing and the mood more cautious, so what’s left runs quieter and more discreet.
There are two centres of gravity to know. The east-side Sanlitun district is what most travellers find first — an old embassy quarter turned nightlife strip, dense with bars, queer-friendly venues mixed in with the straight ones. The scene’s enduring anchor here is Destination, the capital’s premier gay club, just west of Workers’ Stadium. Dongdan, the older queer cluster a few kilometres west and closer to the city centre, runs more local and more discreet — smaller rooms, more Mandarin, a crowd that’s been gathering in those streets for decades. Both reward a late arrival.
