Practical Guides · Gay Chengdu extensions
Pair Chengdu with two very different days out: Mount Emei for a mountain-and-temple journey, Leshan for the river-cliff Buddha. Stay longer when you want the region to feel like a holiday rather than a transfer.
The short answer: choose Chengdu as your city base and Emeishan for a mountain extension. Give a major Emei outing its own day, and visit Leshan separately or on a carefully timed transfer. Three resort nights give you room for both sightseeing and a slower day.

Emeishan or Leshan?
Make time for both.
They belong in the same regional itinerary, but they answer different travel wishes. Emeishan is the mountain base: temples, a significant excursion and the option of slowing down afterwards. Leshan is the river-and-monument visit, with the Buddha at the centre of the day.
| Your priority | Best starting plan |
|---|---|
| A major mountain day | Stay in Emeishan; set aside a full day for the chosen route. |
| The Giant Buddha | Plan Leshan as its own visit; decide your viewing approach. |
| A romantic resort break | Three nights in Emeishan, with one day kept lighter. |
| Gay nightlife and city dining | Keep Chengdu as your city chapter. |
Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha scenic areas share a UNESCO World Heritage listing, inscribed in 1996. The Buddha is 71 metres high; at Emei, temple heritage and the landscape are part of the attraction together. Visit with enough time to see how the places relate rather than simply collect the two names.

Our editorial recommendation is to prioritise fewer, better visits. With one spare day in Chengdu, choose a single outing. With three nights to add, build a regional chapter and include the hotel experience. That decision does more for the trip than a minute-by-minute checklist.

Where should you stay
after Gay Chengdu?
Stay in Chengdu when your evenings revolve around restaurants, friends and the city’s gay scene. Moving out of the city for a resort only makes sense if you also want to change what the days feel like. You should not need to commute back for every dinner.
Choose Emeishan when a mountain excursion and a slower hotel stay are your priorities. Banyan Tree Mount Emei is the hotel featured in our private stay-three-pay-two offer, with a booking enquiry through Unveil China. Ask about bed configuration, room category and preferred privileges before making the choice.

If the Buddha and an onward departure are the main reasons for your stop, compare an overnight in Leshan instead of automatically adding another transfer. Tell us what matters more: resort time, the sights, a shorter departure journey or a particular budget.
Use our gay Chengdu hotels guide for the city, and the Banyan Tree Mount Emei hotel edit for the extension. The room and the route should be chosen together.

Getting there:
airports, trains and cars.
Mount Emei lies roughly 160 km southwest of Chengdu; the actual road distance varies with your starting address and route. For a Chengdu-to-Emeishan road transfer, keep roughly 2½–3 hours in the draft itinerary, then confirm the exact drive from your pickup address. The airport-to-resort figures below are the hotel’s own estimates and should not be substituted for a live traffic check.
| Arrival point | Distance | Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) | About 145 km | About 2 hours |
| Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) | About 160 km | About 2 hours 15 minutes |
Shuangliu is the nearer of the two major Chengdu airports listed by the hotel. Choose your flight on the strength of the actual connection, then plan the transfer around its arrival time. These are approximate hotel estimates, not a promise about traffic.
For rail travel, check services to Emeishan / 峨眉山 and the exact Chengdu departure terminal. The local government identifies Emeishan as a stop on the Chengdu–Leshan intercity route. A rail ticket gets you to the station; organise the last transfer to your accommodation separately.
We would choose a private car when carrying substantial luggage or making Leshan part of the journey. Choose rail when the stations fit your plans and you are comfortable coordinating the transfers. Neither is automatically faster door to door.
Leave flight check-in time separate from the driving allowance. If you need an early departure, discuss the final night’s location before confirming the resort. We have not verified scheduled flights at the forthcoming Leshan airport, so this guide does not rely on it.

LGBTQ travel:
plan the details that matter.
This guide is written for LGBTQ travellers who want to combine Gay Chengdu with a regional holiday. It is not a claim that every attraction or accommodation has a dedicated LGBTQ programme. The practical questions are more useful: who is handling the booking, which room is reserved and what expectations have been communicated.
For a couple, request the bed configuration you actually want and make sure it appears in the confirmation. For a celebration, ask how both guests should be addressed and whether your requested amenity can be arranged. For private touring, explain the kind of company and pace you enjoy.
Our hotel feature presents Banyan Tree Mount Emei as an LGBTQ-friendly recommendation from Unveil China, with Banyan Group’s public Pride statement as background. We do not imply a property-specific accreditation or promise every request will be accepted. We confirm the relevant arrangements for your booking.
Read our hotel-room guide for gay couples and guide to couples and public affection for broader context. Keep temple visits respectful: ask before photographing people and follow the local guidance at religious sites.

A three-night extension
that leaves breathing room.
Arrival day · Transfer, with an optional Leshan stop
Leave Chengdu after breakfast if a sightseeing stop fits your confirmed route. Agree how your luggage will be handled during the visit. If arriving after a long flight, a direct transfer and an uncomplicated evening may be the better choice.
Full day one · Choose your Mount Emei route
Make a mountain day the main event. Tell your guide whether the priority is a summit visit or a gentler cultural outing. Check current access, transport operations and the return plan before departure; leave enough time to respond to the weather.

Full day two · Leshan or the hotel
If Leshan was not part of arrival day, use today for it. Otherwise, keep the morning slow and consider a spa booking or a short outing. This flexible day is also useful if the mountain plan needs changing.
Departure day · A realistic connection
Transfer back to the confirmed airport or station. Discuss timing the day before, and do not assume that a subject-to-availability late checkout will be granted. If the connection is too tight, change the last-night plan rather than squeeze the drive.
For a shorter extension, remove a major sight instead of trying to do everything with less sleep. For a longer one, add a more leisurely Chengdu chapter or another clearly separate region; our Sichuan signature journey provides ideas for a wider trip.

When to go
and what to leave flexible.
Choose dates around the trip you want, then check conditions for the specific days. The resort experience and a mountain viewpoint have different weather dependencies. You can enjoy a quiet hotel day even when the visibility makes a particular excursion less appealing.
Tell us if the Golden Summit is the trip’s central purpose so we can keep a flexible day nearby. Avoid building the entire holiday around a guaranteed sunrise or cloud-sea photograph. If you prefer culture and lower-intensity walking, say so before the guide prepares the route.
Pack for the excursion as well as the hotel: layers, comfortable walking shoes and a small bag you can carry easily. Check the forecast close to departure and ask about current scenic-area instructions. For the bigger seasonal picture, see when to visit China.

Visa-free entry:
check your passport and route.
There are two different visa-free routes to consider. The right one depends on your passport and the flights immediately before and after mainland China. A hotel reservation does not establish eligibility.
30-day entry: eligible ordinary-passport holders can visit for tourism without a visa under the applicable waiver. For example, the Foreign Ministry confirms this for British and Canadian ordinary passports through 31 December 2026. Check the official rules for your nationality and arrival date.
240-hour transit: eligible travellers may use a qualifying onward itinerary to a third country or region through designated ports. Chengdu’s listed airports and the permitted Sichuan area need to match your route. This is transit permission, not a general ten-day tourist visa.
Start with our China visa and entry guide and check the National Immigration Administration’s current transit rules before buying flights. If your passport or route does not qualify, arrange the appropriate visa.

Two offers.
Two separate budgets.
The Banyan Tree private offer starts at US$300 per room per night including taxes, averaged over a qualifying three-night stay. Some preferred booking privileges cannot be combined with the discounted rate. Ask for a quote that identifies exactly what you receive.
Private Sichuan touring
From US$300 per private group, per day.
Includes a driver, vehicle and male guide. Tell us your party size, dates and route for a personalised quote.
Ask us to plan the extension ↗The touring price is separate from the hotel rate. The starting daily rate is per vehicle / private group. Your written proposal confirms guest numbers, service hours, vehicle and route. Hotels, meals, tickets, boats and mountain transport should be treated as separate unless expressly included.
Before comparing options, check the whole cost of the days you want. A cheaper room may not be the better value after transfers; a hotel credit is only valuable for eligible spending. Our China travel costs guide helps frame the wider budget.

Quick answers
before you book.
Is Emeishan part of Chengdu?
It is a separate destination in Sichuan. This guide sits in our Gay Chengdu travel collection because Emeishan and Leshan make a useful extension to a Chengdu holiday.
Which airport should I use?
Compare Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) and Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) for your actual flight route. The hotel lists CTU as the nearer major airport, but the best flight connection may still be through TFU.
Can I see the Buddha and Mount Emei on the same day?
Our recommended resort itinerary separates them. A full mountain outing plus Leshan leaves little flexibility, particularly with queues or changing weather.
Is a male guide included in private touring?
Yes, the starting offer supplied by Unveil China includes a male guide with a driver and vehicle. Confirm your required dates, language and service details in the written quote.
Can LGBTQ couples request one king bed?
Tell us the configuration you want so it can be requested and confirmed for your reservation. We do not substitute assumptions for the exact hotel confirmation.
