Short version: International-brand hotels in Shanghai are reliably welcoming to same-sex couples, and a room near the former French Concession or Jing’an puts you close to the scene. Two travellers sharing a bed is routine and not an issue at check-in.
Best areas to stay
- Former French Concession / Jing’an — closest to the bars and the most walkable, leafy streets.
- The Bund / People’s Square — iconic riverfront views, great for first-timers, short taxi to nightlife.
- Xuhui & Huangpu — central, well-connected by metro, plenty of mid-range options.
What “gay-friendly” means here
China has no anti-discrimination law covering hotels, but in practice international chains and most modern city hotels are entirely used to same-sex couples sharing a room. You won’t normally be questioned. Booking a room with one large bed is unremarkable.
