Henan’s fast-growing crossroads — a quieter, discreet scene at China’s railway heart.
Overview
Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan, China’s most populous province and a cradle of Chinese civilisation. It’s a booming rail and logistics crossroads — half the country seems to change trains here — and it’s grown fast, though it remains more traditional and reserved than the coastal megacities.
Queer life is real but low-key and discreet, with fewer dedicated venues than you’d find in Chengdu or Wuhan. Such scene as there is centres on the old downtown around Erqi (二七) and the gleaming new Zhengdong New District (郑东) by the east railway station.
Most travellers pass through Zhengzhou en route to Shaolin Temple or the Longmen Grottoes near Luoyang — but the city itself is friendly and worth a relaxed evening.
This is a smaller scene than the big four — explore the map below for the handful of venues we track, and help us verify and grow it.

Dedicated gay nightlife in Zhengzhou is limited — perhaps a venue or two that change often, found mostly through the apps rather than signage. Set expectations for a small, discreet scene, and confirm anything is current before you go.
The modern bars and lounges of the Zhengdong CBD and the busier streets of Erqi are mixed and comfortable — a good, low-pressure place to start an evening.
In a more conservative city the scene stays private; treat any sauna listing as a starting point only and verify it’s genuine and open before relying on it.

Big, modern gyms sit inside the malls of Jinshui and Zhengdong. Your hotel gym or a Meituan (美团) day pass works well.
Stay in the Zhengdong New District for modern hotels beside the high-speed east station (ideal for onward trips), or central Erqi for the older heart of the city. Same-sex couples sharing a room is not an issue at chains.
Henan food is hearty and warming: huimian (烩面), thick hand-pulled lamb noodle soup, is the signature dish, and hú là tāng (胡辣汤) — peppery breakfast soup — is a local ritual. Dumplings and stewed meats round it out.
Best as a base for Henan’s heritage.
Day 1 — the city. The Henan Museum’s ancient treasures, a stroll through Zhengdong’s futuristic CBD, then huimian and a relaxed drink.
Day 2 — day trip. Ride out to the Shaolin Temple (kung-fu’s birthplace) or on to Luoyang’s Longmen Grottoes, both easy by high-speed rail.
