Xi’an is one of China’s great historical cities — ancient capital of thirteen dynasties, home of the Terracotta Warriors, and ringed by the best-preserved city wall in the country. What it isn’t is a party destination. The queer scene here is small and low-key, but there’s a sizeable LGBTQ+ community, and a night out is a fun, characterful add-on to a trip built around the history.
Nightlife and modern life cluster around districts like Xiaozhai and the high-tech Gaoxin area, inside and around the Ming-era walls. The scene is discreet, as everywhere on the mainland, and runs on apps and a handful of venues rather than a visible gay quarter.
