You cannot talk about Chengdu's gay nightlife without mentioning The Butterfly. It is one of the most legendary and historically iconic venues in the city that locals already call "Gaydu", and on the right night it is the single best argument for why China's queer scene deserves far more attention than it gets.
It Is a Show, Not Just a Club
Most clubs simply play music. The Butterfly stages a production. Instead of a DJ and nothing else, the venue is famous for elaborate nightly drag shows, professional choreography, and a signature blend of traditional Chinese performance with modern pop culture. The result is theatre you can dance to — the kind of spectacle that has all but disappeared from Western gay clubs.
Two Halls, Two Moods
The space is split into two halls: one leaning harder and more techno, the other a speakeasy-style lounge for when you want to actually hear your friends. That range lets a single night swing from high-energy dancefloor to easy conversation without ever leaving the building.
The Crowd and the Timing
Entry is free, and the room fills fast: from around 10pm on Friday through Sunday it is genuinely crowded, and even on weekdays it stays popular after the 9:30pm entry. The crowd is young, friendly and famously good-looking — and, as everywhere in Chengdu, welcoming to visitors who arrive with a smile and a little patience.
Getting There
The Butterfly sits in the Jinjiang District downtown. For a Didi, the Chinese address is 成都市锦江区东大街下东大街段199号睿东中心C座3楼. Because the club gets packed and there is no walk-in seating, it is worth arranging a table in advance — we are happy to help with booking; email partnership@unveilchina.com ahead of your visit.
Plan the Rest of Your Night
The Butterfly is the centrepiece, but Chengdu has far more — bars, saunas, spa and late-night eats all within easy reach. See the full Chengdu gay guide and map, and if you are still choosing a base, read which Chinese city is best for gay travellers.
