★ Queer party collective
China's most famous queer party — glitter, strobes, fog and house rooted in '80s–'90s NYC club culture. Come in drag and you get in free. The glitteriest dancefloor in the country.
Launched in summer 2016, Medusa Realness is Shanghai's leading LGBTQ+ party brand and, by reputation, China's most beloved queer night — a 'filthy-glamour' blowout often called the glitteriest dancefloor in the whole country. It's the work of resident DJs Michael Cignarale and Sam 'Mau Mau' Which, with host Sky nurturing the city's drag and voguing talent. Expect a room saturated in glitter and the signature pink, strobes and fog, and pink animations from the resident VJs synced to heavy basslines. The music is the heart of it: house and techno rooted in '80s and '90s New York club culture — think Larry Levan and Junior Vasquez — kept thoroughly contemporary.
More than a party, it's a genuine safe space for young LGBTQ Shanghai that platforms drag and voguing, and it has even spun off Medusa Records, a queer-focused label. The golden rule, and the whole point: dress up. Come in drag — any gender — and you get in free; real fantasy is rewarded, and the queue of creatively dressed guests is part of the show. It runs as a roving event (historically monthly, long tied to the Elevator club), so check medusarealness.com or Instagram (@medusa.realness) for the next date and venue. It operates in a legal grey area and is careful about what goes online, so word-of-mouth and their own channels are your best guide.
