Most Prides happen in summer. Winter Pride Maspalomas, on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, cheerfully ignores the calendar and holds its celebration in November — when the weather is still warm, the beaches are golden, and the famous Yumbo Centre comes alive every night. For anyone chasing a bit of sun and a lot of fun in the off-season, it's hard to beat.

What it's actually like

The heart of the action is the Yumbo Centre, a shopping complex that transforms after dark into a sprawl of gay bars, cabaret and dancefloors. Days are for the dunes and the beach; nights are for the parties and the open-air main-stage shows. The crowd skews international and friendly, with a strong bear and mature presence alongside everyone else. It's relaxed rather than frantic — a holiday with a Pride attached, not the other way round.

Planning it from Asia

This is the long-haul part of the world, so expect a connection or two via a European hub. Book accommodation in Playa del Inglés or right by the Yumbo early — Pride week fills up. Pack for summer (it's the Atlantic, but mild), bring reef-safe sunscreen for the dunes, and give yourself a day to adjust before the first big night. Check entry requirements: Gran Canaria is part of Spain, so the Schengen rules apply for most Asian passports.
