If there's one corner of the scene that travels well, it's the bears. The codes are familiar from Chengdu to Cologne, the welcome tends to be genuine, and a "bear week" is just about the friendliest way to drop into a new city's community. For travellers from Asia in particular, a bear week abroad is an easy, low-pressure first trip into international queer life — and increasingly, the events are coming to us, too.
The big bear weeks worth flying for
A handful of destinations have built whole weeks around the community. Sitges Bear Week near Barcelona is the European heavyweight — beach days, terrace bars and circuit-style parties in a town that lives for it, typically in early September. Provincetown Bear Week on the tip of Cape Cod is the great American gathering, gloriously laid-back, usually held in July. And Maspalomas on Gran Canaria draws a big bear crowd around its Winter Pride, with sunshine when the rest of the world is grey — November is the window.
Where bears gather in Asia
You don't have to leave the region to find your people. Taipei has a proud, open bear crowd woven into its nightlife; Tokyo's Shinjuku Ni-chōme has long had legendary bear bars; and Bangkok and Seoul both have lively communities and recurring bear nights. In mainland China the scene — known locally as 熊 (xióng) — organises mostly on apps like Blued and in private groups, with dedicated nights popping up in the bigger cities. As ever in the mainland, a little discretion goes a long way; ask a local or check the apps for what's on the week you arrive.
How to do your first bear week
Pick one event, book early (the good hotels go fast), and don't be shy — introducing yourself is practically the whole point. Pack light, bring sunscreen for the beach weeks, and check the official channels for the party schedule. If you're travelling from Asia, build in a couple of recovery days; these weeks are a marathon, not a sprint.
Whichever you choose, you'll come home with a hundred new friends and a standing invitation to next year's. Confirm dates with the official organisers before you book.
