Few holiday pleasures beat the simple, sun-warmed liberation of a clothing-optional beach: no tan lines, no fuss, no armour. Gay naturism has a long, joyful history, and for a lot of travellers it's less about sex than about a deep, easy comfort in your own skin — the kind that's surprisingly hard to find anywhere else.
Why go bare
Stripping off in good company is a great leveller. The gym body and the dad bod lie on the same sand, and within ten minutes nobody is thinking about it at all. That's the magic: naturism quietly dissolves the ranking and judgement that can make gay spaces exhausting, and replaces them with something warmer and far more relaxing.
Where the boys bare all
Europe leads the way: the legendary dunes of Maspalomas on Gran Canaria, the beaches around Sitges, pockets of the south of France, and clothing-optional gay resorts dotted across the Mediterranean. Further afield, parts of the United States and Australia have well-loved gay naturist beaches too. Always check the legal status of a spot before you visit.
The Asia caveat
Be realistic here: public nudity is broadly illegal and culturally off-limits across most of Asia, including mainland China, and naturist beaches as Europeans know them essentially don't exist. The nearest equivalents are private resorts, members' spaces and the region's bathhouse culture rather than open beaches. Travelling in Asia, keep it covered in public and save the bare-all for destinations where it's welcome and legal.
Naturist etiquette 101
The unwritten rules are simple and universal: Always sit on your own towel, never photograph anyone, keep staring and any arousal discreet, and treat "no" as the easiest word in the world. Naturist spaces run on respect — break it and you'll be politely, firmly frozen out.
Pack smart, stay safe
Bring more sunscreen than you think you need (everywhere), a big towel, water and a cover-up for the walk back. Watch your belongings, go with a friend the first time if it's new to you, and check the legal status of any spot before you strip. Then lie back and enjoy the most honest tan you'll ever get.
