Gay Guangzhou — a warm, low-key southern hub with a welcoming gay scene. Here’s everything a gay traveller actually needs: the bars and clubs, the honest word on saunas and massage, where to stay, the venue map and the practical stuff.
Guangzhou — Canton — is one of China’s biggest, richest and most international cities, and while its queer scene is more discreet than a rainbow-everywhere destination like Taipei, it genuinely thrives if you know where to look. Think late-night KTV, low-key bars, private parties and a handful of excellent clubs, spread across Tianhe and the central districts rather than one obvious “gay street”.
The centre of gravity is Tianhe and the upscale Zhujiang New Town — modern, central, easy to taxi around, and where “mind your own business” is the norm. It’s a huge working city of migrants, students and international business travellers, and that mix makes real space for queer life, even when it’s coded rather than overt.

Guangzhou’s gay bars and clubs.
Guangzhou's flagship gay club inside Utopa Mall in Tianhe — drag and gogo shows most weekends, often called the best gay club in southern China.
More →Well-placed Tianhe Xintiandi club with a younger local crowd, drag and gogo shows — smaller and friendlier than Sister Club, good for pre-drinks.
More →Tianhe gay bar-club drawing a more mature local crowd, with drag and gogo-boy shows on weekends.
More →Here’s the honest answer: since COVID, Guangzhou’s gay sauna scene has become hard to pin down, and there aren’t really any reliably-updated, openly-publicised saunas anymore. You’ll see a few old listings floating around, but many are outdated or inconsistent — we won’t send you to one we can’t stand behind.
If a sauna is a priority, Hong Kong is the far better bet, with many more established options — and it’s a quick high-speed-rail hop from Guangzhou.

The reliable route is the city’s upscale international hotels in Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town, several of which have proper spas and gyms — comfortable, no-questions pampering after a long day.
For hands-on bodywork beyond a hotel, ask a trusted local for a current recommendation rather than booking blind from an app.
