Law & social climate
This is the clearest difference. Taiwan legalised same-sex marriage in 2019 — the first place in Asia to do so — with adoption rights following, and Taipei hosts the largest Pride march in Asia each October. Being out is unremarkable in the cities. Mainland China decriminalised homosexuality in 1997 and it’s legal, but there’s no marriage or anti-discrimination protection, and public LGBTQ+ visibility has been tightening. The lived norm is “don’t ask, don’t tell” — see our is-China-safe guide.
The scene
Taipei is relaxed and out, with a compact bar district, saunas and the Red House plaza — see our gay Taipei guide and Taipei Pride. China rewards depth: Chengdu (“Gaydu”) has the most fun mainland nightlife, Shanghai the most stylish, and Beijing a long-running core — start with our best Chinese city guide and the best gay cities in Asia.
Practicalities
Apps & internet: Taiwan is open — Grindr, Google and Instagram just work. China needs a VPN or eSIM. Visa: Taiwan is visa-free for many nationalities; check China’s rules in our visa guide. Cost: mainland China is generally cheaper outside the tier-1 cities. Pairing: many travellers do both, or pair China with Hong Kong.
The verdict
Want openness, Pride and zero firewall friction? Taiwan. Want scale, history, food and a deeper, more surprising nightlife scene — and don’t mind a little discretion and a VPN? China. Still weighing Asia? Compare gay China vs Thailand too.
