Embarking on a journey to learn Mandarin Chinese this semester has been an incredibly rewarding experience. As a native English speaker, I approached the task with both trepidation and eagerness. Little did I know that within a short period of time, I would be able to navigate basic conversations, appreciate the intricacies of Chinese characters, and gain a newfound appreciation for this ancient and vibrant language.

The initial steps were challenging, as they required a complete shift in mindset. The tonal nature of Chinese, where the meaning of a word changes depending on the pitch with which it is spoken, posed a significant hurdle.
