An African Kid Learns Mandarin41

Growing up in a small village in Ghana, I never imagined that I would one day be fluent in Mandarin. But life has a funny way of throwing you curveballs, and I am grateful for the one that led me to China.

My journey began in 2012, when I received a scholarship to study engineering at Beijing University of Technology. At first, I was terrified. I had never been to a foreign country before, and I didn't speak a word of Chinese. But I was determined to make the most of this opportunity, so I threw myself into learning the language.

It wasn't easy at first. Mandarin is a tonal language, which means that the meaning of a word can change depending on how you pronounce it. I spent hours practicing tones, and I often made mistakes that made my classmates laugh. But I refused to give up, and gradually, I started to improve.

As my language skills improved, so did my understanding of Chinese culture. I attended traditional Chinese festivals, learned to play mahjong, and even tried my hand at calligraphy. The more I learned about China, the more I came to appreciate its rich history and traditions.

After graduating from university, I decided to stay in China and work as a software engineer. I now live in Shenzhen, a major tech hub in southern China. I am surrounded by Chinese people on a daily basis, and I am constantly using my Mandarin skills. I am grateful for the opportunity to live and work in China, and I am proud of the progress I have made in learning Mandarin.

However, my journey has not been without its challenges. One of the biggest obstacles I have faced is discrimination. As a black man in China, I am often stared at and made to feel unwelcome. Sometimes, people refuse to speak to me or serve me in restaurants. It can be frustrating and disheartening, but I try to stay positive and remind myself that I am not the only one who has experienced discrimination.

Despite the challenges, I am committed to staying in China and continuing to learn Mandarin. I believe that language is a powerful tool that can break down barriers and build bridges between people. I am confident that by learning Mandarin, I can help to create a more inclusive and understanding world.
