Chinese Proficiency in the United States: An Uneven History244


The United States has a long and complex relationship with the Chinese language. In the 19th century, Chinese immigrants played a vital role in the development of the American West, and many of them brought their language with them. However, anti-Chinese sentiment was also strong in the United States at the time, and there were several attempts to ban Chinese immigration and to suppress the use of the Chinese language.
