My mother, who is now in her late sixties, has always had a passion for learning new languages. Over the years, she has studied Spanish, French, and German. But it wasn't until recently that she decided to tackle Chinese.
I was initially skeptical about her chances of success. After all, Chinese is one of the most difficult languages in the world to learn. But my mother is a determined woman, and she was not about to let a little thing like difficulty stand in her way.
She started by taking classes at the local community college. But she soon realized that the pace of the class was too slow for her. So she decided to hire a private tutor. With her tutor's help, she made rapid progress.
Within a few months, she was able to hold simple conversations in Chinese. She could order food at restaurants, ask for directions, and even bargain with vendors at the market.
I was amazed at her progress. I had never seen her so excited about learning a new language before. She would spend hours every day studying Chinese. She would watch Chinese movies and TV shows, listen to Chinese music, and read Chinese books.
Her passion for Chinese was contagious. I started to learn Chinese myself, and soon we were both speaking Chinese together.

Here are some of the things I have learned from watching my mother learn Chinese:

* Have fun! Learning a new language should be enjoyable. Find ways to make the learning process fun, and you will be more likely to stick with it.
