CUHK’s Contributions to Biological Sciences60
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a world-renowned research university with a strong tradition in biological sciences. The University's Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Science are home to a number of leading research institutes and centers that are dedicated to advancing our understanding of life and health. CUHK's biological sciences research spans a wide range of disciplines, including cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, and neuroscience.
One of CUHK's most notable contributions to biological sciences is the discovery of the SARS coronavirus. In 2003, a team of researchers led by Professor Yuen Kwok-yung identified the SARS virus as the cause of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak. This discovery was a major breakthrough in the fight against SARS and helped to pave the way for the development of effective treatments and vaccines.
CUHK is also a leader in stem cell research. In 2012, Professor Dennis Lo developed a new method for isolating stem cells from the blood of pregnant women. This method, known as non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), has revolutionized the field of prenatal diagnosis and is now used to screen for a variety of genetic disorders.
In addition to its research strengths, CUHK also has a strong commitment to teaching and training in biological sciences. The University's undergraduate and postgraduate programs in biology are highly respected and produce graduates who are well-prepared for careers in research, academia, industry, and government.
CUHK's contributions to biological sciences have had a major impact on our understanding of life and health. The University's researchers have made groundbreaking discoveries that have led to new treatments for diseases and improved our ability to diagnose and prevent disease. CUHK's commitment to teaching and training in biological sciences is also essential for ensuring that the next generation of scientists and researchers is well-equipped to address the challenges of the future.
